The n factor is what when there is a change in the oxidation state of a particular ion. And this is the number of electrons gained or lost by the species during a reaction and it is always calculated with respect to a particular ion and not more than that.
If we have the following reaction 2H2o - 2H2 + O2
the n factor will be 4 because two oxygen atoms lose 4 electrons means 2 by each of the 4 hydrogen atoms will gain 1 electron. This the reason why the n factor of water is 1.
