Why is osmotic pressure necessary?

The pressure that is exerted by cell wall on organelles is called as osmotic pressure and it develops when there is excess of water around the cell. It is is important because it keeps the stem and leaves stiff and also increases the rate of photosynthesis by opening the stomata only in times of emergency.
