Why is shifting cultivation also known.as slash and burn agriculture?

Because it includes cutting and burning of the forest for cultivation of crops.. hence in hilliy area it is also called as 'jhum'

becozzzz after the land has reduced it's fertility,the farmers clear a patch of land and burn it . Then after burning they will mix up the ash which ingot after burning in the soil to increase its production. The they will remain the land as unused. And the farmer will clear a fresh patch of land and began to cultivate crops.After some months that land will reduce its fertility and here that land will acquire all the nutrients and now he 1st land is ready. this is called as shifting cultivation
