The device usually consists of an emitter of alpha radiation such as americium 241 and a receiver of the radiation, and a buzzer, all connected in a circuit. due to the positive charge of the alpha particles, a small current flows in the circuit. when smoke fills the gap between the emitter and the receiver, the alpha radiation is absorbed by the smoke particles and not received by the receiver, hence the circuit is broken and the alarm is sounded.
