Hey mate...

here is ur answer...

Firstly u have to know what is metal and non- metal.

METALS :
~~~~~~~~
the elements which has valency 1,2,3 are called Metals .
more simply the elements which donates electrons to get octet is called Metals
Non- metals :
~~~~~~~~~~~

The elements which has valency 5,6,7 are called non - metals.
more simply the elements which require electrons to get octet is called non- metals.

All metals are cations and all non- metals are Anions.

here sodium ( Na ) : has electron configuration

2,2,6,1 in k,l,m,shells .

here sodium donates 1 electron to get Neon configuration which is stable.

Hence sodium is a metal .

Similarly , carbon has electronic configuration 2,2,2 in k,l,shells.

here carbon requires 4 electrons to get octet .
here the carbon niether gives nor gain electrons because it is difficult to gain and as well as difficult to loose.

hence carbon is a non - metal .

Hope it helps uuuuu....
