Why is the angle of reflection equal to the angle of incidence when alight ray gets reflected from a surface?

Light choose a short path for it to travel to its destination. This is known as Fermat's principle. When light is incident on reflecting surface the path of incidence is the shortest path so the light select a path with the shortest distance to reflect back making the angle of reflection equal to angle of incidence.
