why is the force of attraction or repulsion between 2 point charges is inversely proportional to square of distance between them and why not cube?

because it follows inverse square rule

It is because of effect of charge (flux) is in all direction (3-dimension) having the shape of sphere and surface area of a sphere increases or decreases with the square of the radius. Therefore strength of the field (or force of attraction or repulsion) is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
