Why is the galaxy infinite?

The galaxy (any galaxy) is very large but does have a defined limit.
The Universe might be infinite but we do not know at this point. If the big bang theory is true then most likely the Universe is not infinite since there would have been a defined limit at the beginning and therefore would still be a defined limit now. The universe of course would be near infinite regardless of this.
