As we know pollen tube releases two male gametes so here syngamy and triple fusion both occurs first one of the male gamete fuses with egg cell which results in the formation of diploid zygote and the other male gamete combines with central cell ( 2 polar nuclei) resulting in triple fusion. So because of these two events - 1st zygote formation and 2nd triple fusion the process of fertilization in a flowering plant is referred to as double fertilization.
