their are several layer of Earth s atmosphere. starting at the surface of the earth, the troposphere extends up to 10 kilometer. from 10 to about 50 km the stratosphere. at about 50 km, the mesosphere begins. thermosphere is the section of the atmosphere higher than 90 km . I shall not go into detail of these layer because your question was "why the sky is so high ".
