Why is there species specificity during fertilization??

Fertilization is an extremely complex phenomenon which takes place species specifically because the eggs does not even respond to the foreign sperms and does not gets fertilized.

The sperm will not be able to penetrate though possessing the initial changes.

The male gamete may penetrate but then perish without even getting united with the egg.

The unspecific fertilization combination may give rise to its incompatibility by showing abnormalities.

The hybrids formed  might eventually develop fully but they will remain sterile.
