why is white phosphorus kept immersed under water

white phosphorus is self igniting. It is quite insoluble in water and hence stored under water to prevent ignition.

As phosphorus is HIGHLY REACTIVE it burns when exposed to air in th me presence of OXYGEN.

P+ O2(in air) --->(PO4) - 3+ heat

To prevent from burning it is stored in kerosene in where it cannot intake O2.
