Multipurpose projects came under great scrutiny due to following reasons:---->

1) Adverse affect on fertility of soil:---- Due to construction of dams , there are no annual floods in the river. As a result, soil does not get nutrient rich silt which affect soil fertility.

2) Adverse affect on aquatic life:--> Aquatic life underneath also do not get nutrient rich material. Also, because of damming river, it is difficult for aquatic life to migrate for spawning.

3) Displacement of people:-- The local people have to give up their land and livelihood to construct dams.

4) Change in cropping pattern :-- Due to construction of dams, farmers have enough water to irrigate their fields.So, now they are growing different crops like commercial crops and other water intensive crops, which has led to salinisation of soil, causing ecological imbalance.

5) Poor sediment flow :-- Damming river affects the natural flow of water, causing poor sediment flow downwards and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of river beds.
