The Treaty of Bassein (Now called Vasai) was a pact signed on 31 December 1802 between the British East India Company and Baji Rao II, the Maratha Peshwa of Pune (Poona) in Indiaafter the Battle of Poona. The treaty was a decisive step in the dissolution of the Maratha Empire, which led to the East India Company's usurpation of the empire's territories in western India in 1818.

The Treaty of Bassein, signed on 31 December 1802 between the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II and the British East India Company, paved the way for dissolution of the Maratha empire.

Gradually the Maratha territories were annexed by the British East India Company and by 1818, it was completely under the Company's control.

In 1803, Baji Rao II was reinstated as Peshwa, under protection of the British East India Company. This was not accepted by all Maratha chiefs and it ultimately resulted in the second Anglo - Maratha war.
