why must jute be retted?

Retting is a proccess in which the tied bundles of jute are taken to a tank where the fibres get loosened and are separated from the main wood stalk.
Therefore jute must be retted to separate the fibres. The extracted fibres are further washed and allowed to dry. Finally they are sold into primary markets.
