Ans. Covalency of an atom is the number of bonds it can form with other atoms within a molecule.

Now, Nitrogen has two 2s and three 2p valence electrons. Now by sharing three 2p electrons, nitrogen can form three covalent bonds along with a lone pair of electrons. But still it can donate its two lone pair electrons to form a fourth Bond as well.
Thus in total it can be able to form only 4 bonds i.e, why nitrogen has maximum covalency of 4.
