petroleum is known as black gold because it has the same importance as gold. it's precious.. similarly petroleum is also very precious. we need petroleum in our day to day life for different purposes.

and you know what? if we keep on using them, then soon it'll extinct. petroleum is fossil fuel and takes million of years. for us, it's value is very high same as gold.

Indian women can't live without gold, similarly we can't live without petroleum XD

that's why it's given the name gold.

now why it's called black gold?

it's because when petroleum is extracted from the ground, it's almost black in colour.

hence, it's given the name black gold.

Answer:

Petroleum is called as black gold, because it's value is very high and it's black in colour in its crude form. Thus, it's called as black gold.

Petroleum is formed from the fossils of sea animals, hence a fossil fuel. It is limited in amount but it's consumption is too high. It is necessary for humans now to be depend on renewable sources like sunlight, air or water for energy generation.

Petrol, kerosene, diesel, paraffin wax, bitumen etc are extracted from petroleum by the process of fractional distillation.
