It is selectively permeable because it has to stop the entry of substances and allow only selected substances to pass in and out the membrane

The Plasma member is selectively permeable because it allows only certain or necessary things inside the cell and block other unwanted materials from entering the cell.

Hope it helps you :-)

Sid77: A selectively permeable cell membrane is one that allows certain molecules or ions to pass through it by means of active or passive transport. Active transport processes require the cell to expend energy to move the materials, while passive transport can be done without using cellular energy.
