Potassium has electronic configuration 2,8,8,1 so it can easily donate an electron without losing a lot of energy but Gold on the other hand has a configuration 2,9,18,32,18,1 so its difficult for it to gain seven electrons and become stable so it reacts less than most of the metals.

It is known by one activity . take a cup of water dip gold in it and you can see that gold is not reactive with water and potassium is reactive with water.
