Why prior to reduction of metal sulphide and metal carbonate must be converted into metal oxide

Anonymous: Direct reduction of carbonates and sulphides to abstain metals is not possible. However, it is much easier to obtain metals by reduction of their oxides. Therefore, before reduction, carbonate and sulphide ores are converted into their oxides by the process of calcination and roasting.
