Rhodophyta, phylum (division) of the kingdom Protista consisting of the photosynthetic organisms commonly known as red algae. Members of the division have a characteristic clear redor purplish color imparted by accessory pigments calledphycobilins, unique to the red algaeand the cyanobacteria.
