Rusting is merely an oxidation process. It involves removal of electrons.

Sea water contains salts (NaCl) , removal of electrons is faster in Sodium chloride as it is an electrolyte that means it conducts charges ( electrons) fast. But freshwater has no electrolyte that can transfer electrons fast.

Hence, rusting takes place faster in saline water or sea water ....

See, If we talking about fresh water or sea water , water enables oxidation.

Salt water or sea water is a very good conductor having lots of dissociated ions.

Because of this ions , there are a number of electrolysis reaction occurs.

And finally accelerate corrosion.

Hope it's useful for your understanding.

All the best.
