It happens because ship has a base in their shape of fish . It has been made by observing a fish's body stucture so it never sinks . But iron nail does because it is not designed for floating on water

it is defined by density of water
if nail of iron is dropped it displaces water less than the weight of it ,due to lower density
but mechanism of ship is different ,it displaces more water than it s weight
