Why should a magnesium ribbon be cleaned before burning in air???​

Because the layer of magnesium oxide (which is formed due to the reaction of magnesium with air ) can be removed in order to get the desired chemical reaction.

magnesium has a protective basic layer of magnesium carbonate which prevents burning of magnesium.that's why magnesium ribbon is rubbed with a piece of sand paper before burning to remove this basic layer of magnesium carbonate.
