Yess..the statement is absolutely justified..
Evolution does not and cannot mean the same as progress..
It is because progress means some sort of development..
But evolution can be defined as a naturally occurring slow, continuous and irreversible process of change..
Evolution can sometimes be meant as the development of simple structures into complex structures but it is not true for all cases..
As progress means development, evolution can be said as a gradual process of change..
Causes of evolution can include factors like natural selection, genetic drift, variation, errors in DNA copying, etc..

Evolution should not be equated with progress. In fact, there is no real 'progress' in the idea of evolution. Evolution is simply the generation of diversity and the shaping of the diversity by environmental factors. The only progressive trend in evolution seems to be that more and more complex body designs have emerged over time. However, again it is not as if older designs are inefficient! So many of the older and simpler designs still survive [..] In other words, human beings are not the pinnacle of evolution, but simply yet another species in the teeming spectrum of life.
