Why should the potentiometer wire be long and uniform in diameter?

A uniform wire will have a predictable level of resistance across it's length(resistance is in proportion to cross sectional area). Also the longer it is the greater the degree of control we have over it's resistance(with more options for the positioning of the contact). Lastly....a longer potentiometer can better dissipate heat.
