Why should we clean magnesium ribbon before burning

So as to get rid of Oxides and carbonates formed on its surface which doesn't allow reaction to happen....

Magnesium is an extremely reactive metal.Magnesium ribbon should be clean before burning Because when it stored it react with oxygen to form a layer of Magnesium oxide ( MgO) which is quite stable and prevent further reaction between magnesium and oxygen.Therefore, the magnesium ribbon is cleaned with sand paper to remove the layer of (MgO)before burning so,that is why it can exposed to air.
