Snowfalls like this are extremely rare in Brazil, the three below being the only ones that reached (or passed) 1 meter: 7 August 1879, in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul, with 2 meters of snow. 20 July 1957, in São Joaquim, Santa Catarina, with 1.3 meters of snow. Often cited as the greatest snowfall in Brazil.

Because Brazil is a tropical country. Subtropical parts of Brazil (Southern states) ocasionally do get snow at high altitude. Examples are the towns of Gramado and São Joaquim. Gramado itself can even be a bit chilly in Summer.
