Sodium metal is kept under kerosene oil because it is very reactive metal placed high in the activity series .In air the surface of sodium get tarnished due to presence of oxygen, water vapour , and carbon dioxide in air . With water it react violently to evolve so much heat that is not possible to handle it . ..
