The Bengal province had the zamindari system of land revenue wherein the company squeezed the zamindars, who collected revenue from farmers, if they did not meet their quota, and took away their zamindari rights and lands.
In the South, the ryotwari system was prevalent, where individual farmers had to directly pay revenue to the company.
The bigwigs down south were therefore not really nurturing much resentment, and were doing well for themselves under the company's rule.
