Steel is preferred for making permanent magnets whereas soft iron is preferred for making electromagnets. Since, steel has a high factor of coercivity, it is preferred for making permanent magnets. Soft iron is used for making electromagnets because of its high permeability and also, hysteresis loop is narrow.

The steel is preferred for making permanent magnet, because -

• Steel is a good ferromagnetic material which holds the magnetic capabilities for a prolonged period of time.

• Steel is rigid and rust proof in nature which is also preferable for making long lasting permanent magnets.

• The coercivity of the steel is also higher than other ferromagnetic materials which is ideal for producing excellent quality permanent magnets.
