The Northern Plain was formed by the deposits brought in by the three major rivers and their tributaries. Alluvium was deposited at the foot–hills of the Himalayas for millions of years. These deposits are now the fertile Northern Plains. Alluvium is soil or sediments deposited by a river or other running water.

The Northern Plain extends to the south-land of Himalaya. The other name of the northern plain is the Gangetic Plain. The northern plains are found between the Himalayas in the North and Deccan Plateau in the South and from Punjab to Assam. The soil (alluvial soil) brought down by the rivers of the region made the plain here. As the area receive water from the three most important rivers of India called the Sutlej Basin, the Ganga Basin and the Brahmaputra Basin. This is why the area is more fertile than others. Wheat, sugarcane, rice, oil-seeds, pulses and jute are some of the major crops grown in the area.
