Cities have more lighting in them than smaller villages in rural areas. Some of that light from unshielded sources or bouncing off light concrete surfaces gets up into the sky and lightens up the sky background, drowning out most of the fainter stars. We call this “light pollution” and the larger and more populous a city is, the greater that light pollution tends to be. In some of the largest cities, it can be difficult to see any but the very brightest few stars in the sky. To see more stars and fainter objects, you have to get away from city lights as much as possible.
