why the temperture of a substance remain constant during its melting point ?

during the melting of ice to water or any solid substance into liquid state the heat given is absorbed by the object as latent heat of fusion
just latent heat gets used up in overcoming the force of attraction between the particles of the solid substance thus no change in state takes place
