This is a very warm part of the body, close to the actual internal temperature of the body, and therefore a more accurate place to check; besides, the norm of 98.6 is based on the oral temperature, so this is a better place to provide a basis of comparison. It is placed under the tongue rather than above to minimize the cooling effect of air being breathed in and out during the reading.
