This is a very warm part of the body, close to the actual internal temperature of the body, and therefore a more accurate place to check; besides, the norm of 98.6 is based on the oral temperature, so this is a better place to provide a basis of comparison. It is placed under the tongue rather than above to minimize the cooling effect of air being breathed in and out during the reading.

it because of intense heat that is present under our tongue so that we can measure our whole body temperature
