Mobile phones are banned from petrol bunks based on a myth that they are a potential source for ignition of the fuel. EM waves coming out of mobile phones are not powerful enough to ignite gasoline nor do they cause static. A mobile phone uses about 1 watt of power. This energy is quite negligible as far as heating materials is concerned. One possible explanation for a cell phone causing a fire is if the battery terminals get shorted for some reason while you are in the proximity of the fuel.
