Aunt Polly tries new ideas on Tom because she analyses that he is turning idle with thoughts of getting involved in fights with children much older than him. she wants to punish him for his evil and tricky pranks, but she finds herself helpless as Tom is her dead sister’s son. Though Aunt Polly loves Tom dearly but Tom’s inclination towards troublesome deeds forces her to question about her parenting. She starts to think of strategies to get Tom busy with some work so that he may not indulge himself in any mischievous works. She decides to punish him by taking his freedom back from him from the very next day.

In his novel, Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) written by Mark Twain, he described Aunt Polly, as a fictional character.


She was the aunt of Tom Sawyer's as well as guardian. Aunt Polly was a kind-hearted, rather simple old lady who looked after Tom and his half-brother Sid very seriously.


There are situations all along the novel where Aunt Polly punished Tom for his behavior by applying new ideas.Her most common idea was punishing by is beating.


In chapter 1, Aunt Polly tried to beat Tom for hiding in the jam and not replying her.


Later, she beats Tom for dropping the sugar although Tom was innocent.


During this incident, Polly justifies her ides of actions, by saying that she punishes Tom because she loves him.
