He was the quintessential Islamic despot. Tormenting Hindus, demolishing temples and building mosques, imprisoning his own father, killing his brother, banning music, etc. These are the stories we hear about pious Muslims of the Wahabi kind. So in a way he anticipated the arrival of Taliban and ISIS.

I don’t think he achieved much political or military victory. Shivaji used to torment him all the time.

I guess he is the real cause of the decline of the Mughal empire, although the full closure came with Bahadur Shah Zafar.
