Hi there!
as far as I know, India was not united before the arrival of British...different parts of India was under different rulers...hence there was no situation where all the people should be united... after few decades...there was a revolt against the British ers..the first revolt was from south..by a ruler named uyyalawada narasimha reddy ..in North it was by mangal pandey...most of them consider that his revolt resulted in first war of independence...as years passed ...people got inspired to take part in freedom struggle...mahatma Gandhi was trying to bring the people of India together to participate in the freedom struggle.he did a pretty good job! Bharat singh has created a great impact by sacrificing himself for the nation...after these series of incidents..the feeling of nationalism was born among the hearts of indians...the feeling of oneness was present which was the backbone for the freedom struggle(unity in diversity).

plucky: sorry it is mangal pandey*
