Vanraj Chavda, the most prominent king of the Chavda Kingdom named the city "Anhilpur Patan" or "Anhilwad Patan" after his close friend and Prime Minister Anhil Gadariya.
During 10th-13th century, the city ‘Anhilwad Patan’ served as the capital of the Chaulukyas, who supplanted the Chapotkatas.
The fortified city was founded in 745 AD.
