Rowlatt Act was enacted in 1919
It gave the govt. enormous powers to repress political activities. This was accompanied by detention of political prisoners without trial.
Despite strong opposition by Indians,this Act was passed by Imperial legislative assembly.
Rallies were organised in various cities. Workers went on strike . Shops were closed down,
The British barred the local leaders from Amritsar to enter into Delhi.
General Dyer ordered to open fire upon a peaceful procession in Amritsar ,which lead to widespread attacks on banks , police , etc.
Satyagrahis were forced to rub their noses on the ground.Villages were bombed.
