why would the sky look dark if the earth had no atmosphere?

My preferred word for the apparent colour of "the sky" would be transparent rather than "black", but a pedant could argue that "transparent" is not a colour...

if the earth has no atmosphere, no particles present either. thus no scattering of light. then, the sky appeared dark.
