Professor hardy consults J.E. Littlewood about Ramanujan's work.
Ramanujan’s letter to professor hardy:
- S.N. Aiyar was a mathematician who supported Ramanujan's efforts in mathematics.
- He recommended that Ramanujan writes to G.H. Hardy, a well-known mathematician at Trinity College, Cambridge University.
Srinivasa Ramanujan's enduring legacy
- Ramanujan included 120 theorems in his famous 1913 letter to Hardy as a typical sampling of his work.
- Hardy had already seen several of these formulas in the course of his own studies.
- But he didn't know a lot of the other formulas.
- It took him more than two hours to figure out whether the letter was written by a lunatic or a genius.
- He conferred with his illustrious Trinity College colleague J.E. Littlewood, and the two of them sat down for another three hours.
- They eventually came to the conclusion that it was the work of a genius. "They must be true," Hardy wrote, "since no one would have had the ingenuity to conceive them if they weren't."
- Ramanujan was invited to Trinity College to work with Hardy after receiving this certificate of permission.
Hence, J.E. Littlewood is consulted by Professor Hardy about Ramanujan's work.
