Would the cause of racial equality have progressed more slowly if, in 1861, Abraham Lincoln had simply let the Southern states secede?

Answer:

Well Lincoln and many abolitionists wanted to free the Black slaves and repatriate many back to Africa. But most African-American slaves argued they were as American as their white settler masters. The more “radical Republicans” wanted full rights for Blacks after they were emancipated.

The best country to compare with is Brazil which “During the era, (Brazil) imported more African slaves than any other country. An estimated 4.9 million slaves from Africa were brought to Brazil during the period from 1501 to 1866.]” Brazil has a rich history with slaves and more people should read about its history. Slavery was finally abolished in 1884, but color still was an important factor in dividing Brazilian society where those with the darkest skin color still were at the bottom of the economic barrel. The issue of race is still big in Brazil despite the greater percentage of black Brazilians
