Answer:

The word Lok Adalat means People’s Court as described by the Supreme Court. It is a forum where the cases that are not yet brought before any court are settled.

1. The Lok Adalats have been given statutory status and the Act was amended in 2002 to provide for the establishment of the Permanent Lok Adalats.

2. Such forums are created to provide free and competent legal services to the poor and weaker section of the society.

3. The Lok Adalats do not have any fee.

4. They provide a speedy trial of the disputes.

5. The aggrieved can directly interact with the judge which is not possible in regular courts.

6. The judgments of the Adalats are binding on the parties.

7. The matters that are dealt in these courts are matrimonial/Family disputes, Criminal Cases, Land acquisition cases, disputes related to Telephone Bills, House taxes etc.

Hope this will help..
