In hindi it was called kala pani.Atlanta Point, Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During pre independence era there was a provision for especially political prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment to be transported to Andaman Islands on the courts orders. At that time life imprisonment meant being incarcerated till death. This place was on an island therefore nobody could escape. At that time there was no electricity. There was prevalence of disease and diarrhoea. And as the jail was isolated the officials in charge had a free hand to do as they wished.
