Dr BR Ambedkar was demanding separate electorates for dalits. Mahatma Gandhi believe that separate electorates for the lights would slow down the process of the integration into society. Ambedkar ultimately accepted Gandhiji's position and the result was Poona pact of September 1932. It gave the depressed classes reserved seats in provincial and Central legislative councils but they want to be voted in by general electorate..

In 1932, the British granted separate electorate to the sikh the Christian and the harijans
Gandhiji went on fast unto death in protest against the proposal for a separate electorate for harijans
This resulted in poona pact
Under which the harijans agreed to joint electorate for all the Hindu with reservation of seats for the harijans
