Don Pedro de Mendez is the captain of the ship in Gulliver's 4th voyage. He is behind the return of Gulliver back to England. Don Pedro is a very kind-hearted & benevolent officer equipped with human virtues. He treats the half deranged Gulliver with patience after he is left out by Houyhnhnms. He allows Gulliver to travel on his ship as far as Lisbon. He offers Gulliver his own finest suit of clothes to replace his tattered clothes. He allows Gulliver to stay in his house for some days. Thus, he is very kind & has other human qualities. He also gives him 20 pounds to his journey home to England. Don Pedro shows Gulliver the same kind of hospitality & generosity as did the Houyhnhnm master to him. But Gulliver sees Don Pedro as a Yahoo. However, Don Pedro is finally able to to converse with Gulliver with his great qualities of head & heart. Don Pedro is a minor actor. But due to his role, he falls in the category of major characters.
