It was a fine summer morning. Alex peered through his window to the playground that was adjacent to his house. He saw a group of boys playing baseball. He also wanted to play but he recognized the boys. They were the same boys who had badly beat a poor pup. Mother had advised him not to make friends with them.
Alex kept watching the game. A boy who was playing came up near Alex's and said " Hey, will you play with us?"
" Thank you, but I can't." Alex replied.
"Okay. Let me tell you we are enjoying the game" the boy said and then ran away.
They really must be enjoying, Alex thought. He rushed down the stairs and was out of his house in a moment. He reached the playground and watched. After a moment or so, he went near the boys and asked whether he could play. Their leader agreed.
It was Alex's chance at bat. He hit quite good. The leader was impressed. But all hell broke loose , when Alex hit the ball that broke the glass pane of his neighbour Mrs. Spencer.
Everybody started to run. Alex also came back to his house. His mother saw him and asked" Where have you been?"
" I was just strolling outside," lied Alex.
His mother asked him to go to his study room.
Doorbell rang. Mrs. Spencer complained that Alex had broken her window glass.
Alex shook with fear. " Mrs. Spencer, I wasn't playing at all. I was just taking a walk." He lied again.
" Oh, wasn't it you ,who I saw running away straight to your house?" Mrs.Spencer asked.
"No, they are the bad boys who beat the puppy last week", Alex again lied.
" How did you know they were those boys?" his mother looked at him suspiciously.
Alex gulped. " I was seeing them through my window so I know, mother" . His mother was convinced. She told Mrs. Spencer that Alex will never play with those boys. Mrs.Spencer went back.
Alex was climbing the stairs when he saw his sister, Alice standing there.
" I saw everything,Alex. You were playing with them. You broke Mrs.Spencer's glass pane. I will tell everything to mother", saying this Alice went back to her room.
That night Alex couldn't sleep. He was twisting and turning in his bed. Suddenly he had a bright idea. He took a piece of paper and wrote everything what had happened and slipped it under his parents room
Next morning, mother summoned Alex to her room. Alex dreaded the worst.
" Alex, why did you lie earlier? If you had confessed your mistake I wouldn't have scolded you. But it is good that you have told me the truth. I hope you will apologize Mrs.Spencer" , his mother said.
Alex was overjoyed. He felt good after telling the truth. As he was going to Mrs.Spencer's house he thought it was always better to tell the truth.
