Dear Diary:
Today I had one of the queerest days of my life! I had gone to attend my cousin’s wedding; but I had never thought in my wildest fancy I would meet an old sailor! He was standing near the church. As I along with my two other cousins was about to enter the church, he stopped me! I was outraged! However, he was not an ordinary old man. He had some mystical powers. He hypnotized me! And then he narrated me his tale of woe! He narrated that in his youth he had gone on a round the world voyage. As there ship reached Antarctica it got stuck in ice-bergs. Then an albatross flew to the ship out of mist. It proved auspicious and lucky for the ship. The ice broke; the ship began to move again. The albatross became the crew’s friend. Then, one day the bird got killed accidentally from the mariner’s arrow. The crew members feared the killing would bring them trouble; but their ship did not face any trouble. They rather met pleasant and bright weather conditions. The crew members praised the mariner for killing the bird, which they thought had brought mist and ice at Antarctica. But as the ship was passing by the equator, the ship got stuck in a silent sea. The ship remained stuck for many days. It was very hot there; all their water and provisions were used up. Then all the crew members blamed the old mariner for killing the albatross. They believed it was the spirit of the bird that had made the ship stuck there. So, they decided to punish him. They hung the dead albatross around the mariner’s neck and made him stand at the prow of the ship. Since the mariner was really penitent for his mistake, only he survived. The rest all died. I was really moved to hear the mariner’s story, though I missed the wedding.
